Operating Systems
Verisurf continues to evaluate the operating system (OS) requirements for its software to ensure the optimal user experience for our customers. It’s important to note that Verisurf X7.1 will be the last major release to support Windows 7 32-bit OS.
Moving forward, we recommend the use of Windows 10 (version 20H2 or later), or subsequent 64-bit Professional editions for an optimized Verisurf experience. Please be aware that while Verisurf may function on other Windows editions, such as the Home Edition, or within virtual environments, like Parallels for Mac, these configurations have not been officially tested and are therefore not supported.
Processor
The processor speed will impact how fast the software will calculate and complete tasks. More and more aspects of Verisurf are becoming multi-core processor aware with each release.
Memory
Memory plays a crucial role in the overall performance of Verisurf software, particularly when dealing with large point cloud measurements and reverse engineering tasks. As the software uses all available RAM, it will switch to utilizing virtual memory space stored on the hard drive when the RAM is insufficient. This transition can significantly slow down the system.
To ensure optimal performance, it’s essential to have an adequate amount of memory based on your specific application. As outlined in the System Requirements table, we recommend:
For Verisurf Minimum Probing System Requirements: 8 GB of RAM
For Verisurf Recommended Probing System Requirements: 32 GB of RAM
For Verisurf Minimum Scanning System Requirements: 32 GB of RAM or higher
For Verisurf Recommended Scanning System Requirements: 64 GB of RAM or higher
In some scenarios, the recommended RAM size can also be found in the documentation provided by your device’s OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). By following these memory recommendations and consulting your device’s OEM when necessary, you can optimize the performance of Verisurf software and avoid slowdowns caused by insufficient RAM.
Video
When choosing a new computer to run Verisurf software, it’s essential to focus on the video card as it plays a significant role in the software’s overall performance and user experience. The minimum requirement for the video card is OpenGL 3.2 and OpenCL 1.2 support with 1 GB memory. However, integrated or onboard graphics are not recommended.
For an optimal experience, we suggest using NVIDIA® Quadro or AMD® Firepro™ / Radeon Pro Workstation-class graphics cards. The specific requirements depend on whether your application is more focused on probing or scanning. For probing-oriented applications, a graphics card with 4 GB or higher dedicated memory is recommended, while for scanning-oriented applications, a card with 6 GB or higher dedicated memory is advised. In more demanding scenarios, a graphics card with 16 GB or higher dedicated memory can provide the best performance.
Please ensure that you use up-to-date drivers from your video card manufacturer, as outdated drivers can significantly impact your card’s performance. You can find the latest drivers for NVIDIA and AMD on their respective websites and use the automatic detect feature to identify the specific video card installed in your computer.
Monitor
The majority of our internal systems utilize dual monitors and we find this to be more productive. A second monitor allows applications such as the Verisurf Device Interface, UCC Servers, and other applications to run on the secondary monitor while Verisurf utilizes the primary monitor. Verisurf software does not currently support 4k monitors and without disabled DPI scaling issues have been reported.
Storage
We have found that one of the biggest upgrades to be made is to invest in a Solid State Drive (SSD). These are now priced at a point which makes them a good investment. Many of our test systems employ a smaller primary SSD for the OS and install applications with a second large capacity conventional drive for data. All Verisurf releases are available on DVD. Although Verisurf is available as a download, we recommend any new hardware you purchase include a DVD drive or USB 3.0 ports at a minimum.
Mouse
A three-button mouse is recommended. Verisurf has special functions that can be performed with the middle mouse button. We would recommend using a major brand name like Microsoft or Logitech.
3D Mouse
A 3D mouse improves the way you interact with your 3D application. It is designed to be used by your non-dominant hand in tandem with a standard mouse for a balanced and cooperative work style. You gently manipulate the 3D mouse’s controller cap to simultaneously pan, zoom and rotate 3D content while your standard mouse is free to select menu items or parts of the model. More technical and purchase information can be found on the 3Dconnexion website.
Antivirus Software
Most computers today have some kind of anti-virus software to protect from unwanted malware. In some cases, these have been found to interfere with applications such as Verisurf, which are running on the PC. We do not recommend particular products, but if you see unexpected issues with crashing, it may be a clash with anti-virus software. Try temporarily disabling the anti-virus software or setting an exception for Verisurf.
