Technical Tip Using Leica TDRA6000 with Verisurf


Verisurf and the Leica TDRA6000

This Tech Tip will cover setting up and measuring with the Leica TDRA6000 Laser Station using Verisurf and the Verisurf Device Interface version 3.42.09 or higher.

Set up the Serial to USB Adaptor

This process will only need to be completed the first time a Leica TDRA6000 Laser Station is connected to a computer once the computer is set up, this process should not need to be done again.

  1. From the TDRA6000 Main Menu select (5) Config...

  1. Select (4) Interfaces

Note: The following will need to be performed one at a time for RCS Mode and Export Job.

  1. Select RCS Mode 
  2. Select EDIT

  1. Verify Use Interface is set to No and select CONT then choose YES when/if prompted.

  1. In the Interfaces screen select GeoCOM Mode and then choose EDIT.

  1. In the GeoCOM Mode screen verify the following selections:
  • Use Interface selection is set to Yes
  • Port is set to Port 1
  • Device is set to Port 1 
  • Protocol is set to RS232 GeoCOM 
  1. Select DEVCE

  1. Select Port 1 and then choose EDIT

  1. In the Edit Device screen verify the following selections:
  • Baud Rate is set to 115200
  • Parity is set to None
  • Data Bits is set to 8 
  • Stop Bit is set to 1 
  1. Choose STORE

Note: The following will need to be performed one at a time for RS232, RS232 GSI, and RS232 GeoCOM

  1. Select RS232 and select EDIT

  1. In the Edit Device dialog verify the following:
  • Baud Rate is set to 19200
  • Parity is set to None
  • Data Bits is set to 8
  • Stop Bit is set to 1 
  1. Choose STORE

  1. Download the latest driver for the Serial to USB cable driver from the Leica website.

*The cable will have specify whether it is GEV161, GEV189, GEV195, GEV218, GEV234, GEV267, GEV268, or GEV269.

  1. Connect the Serial to USB cable to the PC
  2. Launch the Device Manager and select Ports (COM & LPT)


  1. Right mouse click USB Serial Port (COM3) and select Update Driver Software.

  1. Select Browse my computer for driver software

  1. Specify the path for the driver (as shown on the right) and click Next followed by Close when prompted.

  1. Right mouse click USB Serial Port (COM3) and select Properties

  1. Select the Port Settings tab and verify the following settings:
  • Bits per second is set to 9600, 
  • Data bits is set to 8
  • Parity is set to None
  • Stop bits set to 1 
  1. Choose OK

  1. Launch Verisurf from the Computer Desktop
  • Select Show Device Setup from the Device Manager

  1. Choose the Leica TDRA6000 Laser Station from the list on Installed Devices and click Start Device followed by OK.

  1. From Leica GeoCOM Controls select Tracker - Options - Settings & Configuration

  1. In the Settings and Configuration dialog verify the following settings:
  • Com Port is set to COM3
  • Baud Rate is set to 19200
  • COM Timeout is set to 
  1. Choose OK
  2. You are now ready to perform measurements in Verisurf.

Overview of the TDRA6000 Laser Station

The following information is a brief overview of the TDRA6000 Keyboard and Menu structure. Refer to the Leica TDRA6000 User Guide for details.

Prepare for Measurement

  1. Using the Levelling screws on the Tribrach rough Level the TDRA6000 using the Circular Level on the device (shown on right).
  2. Select SHIFT – F12 on the keyboard to enter the Electronic Level mode and using the Levelling screws on the Tribrach level the device as close to 0.0000 as possible. 

  1. If not already started in the Verisurf Device Manager, Start the TDRA6000.
  2. The Leica GeoCom Controls dialog will appear (shown right) once the Device is started.

r. Move Device to Az/El Zero

s. Toggle Angular Movement


  1. Select the type of Target (l) that will be used for measurement.
  2. You can then select OK to close the dialog box or leave the dialog box open for easy access.
  3. To measure points in Verisurf, select the type of Measurement and use F1 from the TDRA6000 keyboard to initiate the Measurements (records Angles and Distances).
